Mental health issues are characterized by a condition that affects one’s mood, thinking, and behavior. They are often referred to as mental illness and disorders if things get out of hand. We experience them daily as a part of our lives and they can become a serious life-long problem if not kept in check.

Mental health issues are divided into two categories- neurotic and psychotic.

Neurotic:

It is a mild condition that arises from severe emotional experiences like depression, anxiety, panic attack etc. It is caused by stress and when an individual overthinks and over appreciates the issues going on in their lives.

Psychotic:

This condition disrupts a person's perception of reality and is characterized by delusions and hallucinations. They feel, hear, and see things that aren’t actually present. It includes disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychotic depression, etc, and can be passed on genetically.

Failures and disappointments are a part of life but your mind decides how you perceive them and when to move forward. You must learn to cope up with these issues and accept if and when you have a problem.

Coping Strategies to alleviate Mental Health Issues

Recognize the warning signs of your mental and emotional turbulence and take a step back if you feel overwhelmed. Here a few mental health coping strategies that can help relieve the situation-

See a Therapist

Seeking professional help is nothing to be ashamed of. A therapist can help you find better ways of dealing with mental health issues. It’s okay to talk about your problems with your family members and friends but do not take their advice over a mental health professionals'. It may take some time before you open up to a therapist but it will be worth it for your recovery.

Interact with your family and connections

There are days when you don’t even want to get out of bed, let alone talk to someone. You don’t have to force yourself but try interacting with your family and friends whenever you can. You can also join a support group to interact with the people who are going through the same things as you are. Remember, you don’t have to suffer in silence.

Be kind to yourself

Accept your feelings and practice self-compassion. Do not overthink about the failures and try to put feelings of sadness and anger behind you. We understand this won’t be easy but start with taking a small step forward. Comfort yourself and don’t beat yourself for mistakes that won’t even matter in the future. You can start by practicing a hobby in your leisure time, something that is easy and fun.

Self-care

Your mental health has an equally negative effect on your physical health. You can make it right by eating good and healthy food. No one is stopping you from even eating your guilty pleasure food once in a while if it makes you feel happy. Try to exercise a bit for at least 30 minutes daily. You can go for a walk, run or practice yoga and meditation. Meditation calms your mind down and keeps stress and anxiety at bay.

Set a goal and work towards it

We often get stuck in the downward spiral of mental health issues when we lose our purpose in life. You need to find that purpose and make it your driving force. This goal will give you a reason to get out of bed every morning and work hard. It will keep you engaged and won’t let negative thoughts clutter your mind. When you feel motivated, your emotional and mental health will improve giving a way to faster recovery.

These habits will improve your mental health and help move past the issues that weigh you down. You can easily adapt them in your life in combination with what your therapist suggests. It is important to understand that you’re not alone in this and you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself. You’ll get through it eventually and until then hold on to hope.
